In certain sports such as racing, many contestants may compete, simultaneously or consecutively, with one winner; in others, the contest is between two sides, each attempting to exceed the other. Some sports allow a "tie" or "draw", in which there is no single winner; others provide tie-breaking methods to ensure one winner and one loser. A number of contests may be arranged in a tournament producing a champion. Many sports leagues make an annual champion by arranging games in a regular sports season, followed in some cases by playoffs.

La Grèce antique, la Rome antique, Byzance, l'Occident médiéval puis moderne, mais aussi l'Amérique précolombienne ou l'Asie, sont tous marqués par l'importance du sport. Certaines périodes sont surtout marquées par des interdits.

Sie haben häufig einen Spiel- und Wettkampf-Charakter. Das Erreichen von Zielen ist dabei elementar. Das Wort selbst wurde im 19. Jahrhundert vom englischen sport entlehnt, welches durch Prokope aus disport entstand und aus dem Altfranzösischen entlehnt ist. Ins Deutsche wurde das Wort „Sport“ dann durch Fürst Pückler eingeführt. In synonym verwendeten Begriffen – wie „Körperertüchtigung“, „Leibesübung“ oder „Körperkultur“ – wird deutlich, dass sportliche Betätigung auch unter Aspekten der Hygiene und Gesundheit als essentiell anzusehen ist.
