Pistole is the French name given to a Spanish gold coin in use from 1537; it was a double escudo, the gold unit. The name was also given to the Louis d'Or of Louis XIII of France, and to other European gold coins of about the value of the Spanish coin. One pistole was worth approximately ten livres or three écus, but higher figures are also seen. The derivation is uncertain; the term may come from the Czech píšťala, or from the Italian town of Pistoia; either way, it was originally spelled pistolet and originated in military slang, and probably has the same root as pistol.

Die Pistole ist eine Schusswaffe und gehört zur Kategorie der Handfeuerwaffen. Sie wird u. a. durch das deutsche Waffengesetz (WaffG) als Kurzwaffe (Faustfeuerwaffe) definiert. Unterschieden werden heute Einzel- und Mehrlader­pistolen sowie Revolver. Letztere werden je nach Gesetzeslage und Bestimmungen der Anwender entweder zu den Pistolen gerechnet, oder stehen gleichrangig neben ihnen als eigene Kategorie von Handfeuerwaffen.

Pistole je krátká ruční palná zbraň. První pistole byly jednoranové či víceranné a používaly černý střelný prach. V 19. století se objevily samonabíjecí pistole a jako náplň se začal užívat nově objevený bezdýmný střelný prach. Oproti revolverům a jiným krátkým palným zbraním se moderní pistole vyznačují ve valné většině samonabíjecí konstrukcí. Prakticky všechny moderní pistole užívají horizontálně posuvný, blokový závěrový mechanismus.
