Chloroform

Chloroform, or trichloromethane, is an organic compound with formula CHCl3. It is a colorless, sweet-smelling, dense liquid and one of the four chloromethanes and a trihalomethane. It has historical uses as an anesthetic and narcotic sedative, however in the modern era it is more widely recognized as a carcinogen and precursor to phosgene gas. In industry, it is produced on a large scale as a precursor to PTFE and for the production of refrigerants.
