Declarada según el Banco Mundial en su estudio de "ciudades competitivas para estudios y crecimientos" como la ciudad más próspera de América Latina y ejemplo para el mundo.Está ubicada al nororiente del país sobre la Cordillera Oriental, rama de la cordillera de los Andes, a orillas del río de Oro. Bucaramanga cuenta con 528.575 habitantes y, junto con Floridablanca, Girón y Piedecuesta, conforma el área metropolitana de Bucaramanga con un total de 1 141 694 habitantes, siendo la quinta aglomeración urbana más poblada del país. Se encuentra a 384 km de Bogotá, capital del país.

Bucaramanga is een stad en gemeente in de Cordillera Oriental, onderdeel van de Colombiaanse Andes, gelegen op 1189 meter hoogte in het departement Santander, waarvan het de hoofdstad is. Bucaramanga telt 549.263 inwoners, maar de agglomeratie die deels ook op het grondgebied van de omliggende gemeenten ligt, heeft 1.059.000 inwoners. Hiermee is Bucaramanga na Bogota, Medellín, Cali en Barranquilla in inwoneraantal de vijfde stad van Colombia. Bucaramanga is een belangrijke commerciële stad en ligt in het centrum van een van de rijkste koffie- en tabaksplantagegebieden van Colombia. In de stad worden textiel, sigaretten en ijzergoederen vervaardigd. De stad heeft een hoogwaardige (technische) universiteit, de Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS). Ook staat de stad beroemd om haar schoenenproductie. Bucaramanga is de naamgever van een keten van schoenenwinkels in andere steden.
